Nora is an adaptation of one of the most famous plays of all time Henrik Ibsen’s 1889 relationship exploration A Doll’s House.

Perhaps the most famous moment in modern theater is the moment when Nora, offstage, slams the door on her old life. In Ibsen’s time it was completely shocking and it was then called the door slam heard round the world. Widely accepted as a breakthrough feminist moment, nothing in women’s lives or in society was ever quite the same.

However, Nora is not a “feminist” play, it is a play about all relationships, about power, control and choices. Some of the characters remind us of the schoolyard bully in today’s society, but the roles could easily be reversed. Steven Winn, Arts and Culture critic, San Francisco Chronicle said in his review: “Any one who’s been married, lived with a partner, had a long term relationship, or closely observed another couple, will respond on contact to the dangerous, thrilling, sympathetic shock of what Nora does.”

Nora is a charmingly seductive, intelligent, beautiful and searingly intense evening of quality theater. In the title role is Wavey Shaver. With a theater degree from the University of Montana and several years of theater company experience, she brings power and vivacity to the role. Other cast members include Darren Dirk as Dr. Rank, Hilary Clayton as Mrs. Linde, Alex Shradel as Mr. Helmer, and Jerry Schneider as Krogstad. Judy McDonald is director of the play.

Ingmar Bergman and Henrik Ibsen make a potent combination. Bergman has created an adaptation that lets nothing come in front of the vital elements of the story. He has rendered the story with an expressionist eye, yet with universal appeal for contemporary audiences. Instead of the talky dialogue of the original Victorian text, the story is made dynamic and almost cinematic by the use of quick cuts and constant motion.
