The Waterfront Players Scholarship Fund

The Waterfront Players Board of Directors voted in July of 1999 dedication of a portion of all ticket sales to a theater arts scholarship fund. The scholarship will be open to any graduating senior who plans to pursue a degree in theater or related art, or to any current theater major. Scholarships are also available for students enrolling in Waterfront Players workshops and classes. Applications will be accepted from any student who is from Coos, Curry, or Western Douglas Counties. Students may apply more than once for this scholarship.

Waterfront Players President Pat McDonald noted:

"We know that the arts are terribly underrepresented in the scholarship field, and we believe our program is unique in the region."

The Waterfront Players, a non-profit theater company based in North Bend, have awarded a college scholarship in the amount of $750.00 to Gwynn Shanks. Shanks is a 2006 graduate of North Bend High School. In the fall, Gwynn will be attending Macalester College, a private liberal arts college, in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she will major in theater and dance.

Gwynn has performed in high school and with the Missoula Children's Theater. She has been a member of the Waterfront Players company of actors for the past two years. She has been seen in a number of memorable roles, but most recently as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. Gwynn has also studied dance for more than ten years. She is currently serving as the movement choreographer for the Waterfront Players production of Quilters.

According to Shanks, Macalester College has a fantastic state-of-the art theater department, and it was one of the few schools that offer and combined theater/dance degree. She will also be taking a second major in the field of pre-law.

Waterfront Players Artistic Director Judy McDonald noted at the scholarship ceremony that Gwynn has been a tremendous asset to the company over the past two years. "She is one of those rare teens who comes through our program. She has been an absolute delight to work with because she is not only creative and capable, but also flexible, intelligent and willing to put herself aside and let the character she's playing lead the way."

This is the third scholarship awarded by the Waterfront Players in recent years. The scholarship is available to any graduating senior who is pursuing a college degree in theater or a theater-related discipline. "Theater educations is the first item in our mission statement," noted McDonald, "and we are delighted to be able to make this award this year."
